March 16, 2016
It is always a pleasure to have Sheriff Ed Bonner at a Rotary meeting...even though he belongs to another service club!! We still recognize him for all the good he does in Placer County!
Is this show and tell, Sheriff?? Or just proving you have a vest on??
There is a nationwide initiative, including Placer County, called "Below 100" program for the safety of their people, and all of us!!...they are asking officers & deputies to:
The objective is that nationwide there should be less than 100 officers/deputies lose their lives in the line of duty if they pay attention to these 4 things!!
Most deputies are highly trained and it has been proven that if they do not have experience, they will always fall back on their training...so they need to have continuous training!!

Where Marketing and Outreach Meet!
According to Ken Course of Explore Momentum, outreach is marketing without a budget!! In total, marketing is the promise to solve problems and meet the needs of the customer, no matter whether that customer is a donor to a non-profit, a volunteer or a staff member...it is still marketing that gets the end result!!
Ken Course Kylee Mebust - off to Austria!!!
Ken emphasized that it is important to understand the problem of the customer in their language and then you have to track the results!! Simple as that!

Motorcycle Bob Rides In and Promotes Being "This Close"!!
The Rotary Club of Rocklin/Loomis Basin had the honor of hearing Bob Mutchler, "Motorcycle Bob", tell about his journey to where he is today...an advocate for the eradication of polio!! And, John and Stacey "deliver" the Best of the Best award to the Club!!
Bob, who was stricken with polio at 9 months old, lived in an iron lung for 3 years!! 49 years later...post-polio syndrome pays a visit. Bob started riding his motorcycle across the United States to raise awareness about the Rotary Foundation when he discovered that the publicity he was creating for Rotary was also raising money...almost $1.5M, and this is when he realized that Rotary was more than "just a service club" but a way to educate the public.
Today, Rotary has only 2 countries with active cases of polio - Afganistan and Pakistan! As of July 26, 2015, there have been no wild polio cases in India for one year, so we are closer with that country!! Does that mean the work is over? Absolutely not, as movement among countries enhances the chances of the spread of the disease!!
However, thanks to people like Bob Mutchler and other Rotarians participating in immunization trips, Rotary will continue the fight!!

Induction of New Member and Inspiring Speaker...
What is Better than That??
The 1st new member of the 2015-16 Rotary year was inducted at the July 15, 2015 meeting! Welcome, Stephen Haynes!!
![]() ![]() The speaker for this meeting was Linda Bello-Ruiz and her involvement and advocacy in the area of human trafficking. Her inspiring story starts with - "During the summer of 1970, nineteen-year-old Linda stops on the way home from work to talk to a handsome stranger. That chance meeting on a San Francisco street corner changes the course of her life. Linda’s compassionate, gripping, and soul-searching memoir tells the story of her remarkable journey from the darkness of despair and crushed dreams to the creation of a house of hope." Hearing her inspiring story only drove home the challenges that we all face in today's world.

1st Club Assembly of the Rotary Year!
The Club held their first Assembly on July 8th with 5 guests present! It was a great way to introduce these guest to the "inner workings" of Rotary! This assembly focused on Membership, The Rotary Foundation, Club & Community Service, and MyRotary on the RI website!! It was fun to have four stations set up for the members to rotate through on 10 minute intervals....sounds like the original rotation of Rotary with its four original members and their office meeting rotation!!
Marlene Sanborn (R), our club Foundation Chair, had the honor of awarding Cris Vaughan his Paul Harris Fellow +2 pin which Cris's wife Candice (middle) surprised him with for his birthday! Congratulations and Happy Birthday to Cris!

Rocklin/Loomis Basin and South Placer Rotarians Join Together for Lunch!
Together we can make a difference!!! What a fun meeting!
The two Rocklin Rotary clubs gathered together at noon for fellowship, comraderie and to hear a great speaker.
Joey Garcia, a writer and spiritual director, shared with us some of her experiences in helping teens understand that not all adults are offended by them! Her "take away" was that as an adult we could "be offended by a teen and miss an entire conversation with them!" All present understood that we have been guilty of trying to "tell" a teen what to do rather than to "hear" what they are saying! Most teens just want to be loved, and we have opportunities for teachable moments all the time! When is the last time you misunderstood a teen!

What have you done to make an impact in the community?? Desiree Wilson and Bud Ackerman inspired our Club by responding to that question with a presentation involving high school students and Rotarians gathering with business leaders to talk with the students about leadership!! Small groups, interactive sessions, and lots of communication did just that!!
The discussions evolved around the topics of ethics, leadership and communication! Too many of our youth today do not have the real life scenarios that allow them to make the right choices all the time! This workshop is one more opportunity to "reach out" to those youth who are eager to learn these new skills!! Congrats to the Point West Rotary Club for making an impact in their community!!!

Literacy in Our Backyard! One of Rotary's key focus points is LITERACY! So it is no surprise that one of the key person's involved in the literacy emphasis in Rotary is the dynamic, Jean Irwin-Hatfield! And, as Rotarians, we can help! Many programs are available for Rotarians to interact with elementary students to build their reading skills. Rotary Ambassadorial scholar, Jean Irwin-Hatfield; Jean talking with Rocklin Unified School District Administrator, Marty Flowers.

Having Fun Learning About Red Ribbon Week In support of Red Ribbon Week, our program centered around the history of Red Ribbon Week and the effects of drugs on your system.
Red Ribbon Week is a great opportunity to expose people to the importance of being drug free. We all know someone who has had issues with drugs - either themselves, a child, a grandchild, a neighbor, a friend...so the more we educate others about the issues that exist the better our world will be. After the abduction and murder of Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent, who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985, a group of people joined together in honor of Camarena's memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began to wear red badges of satin. Thus the beginning of Red Ribbon Week, October 23-31, every year. For a complete album of the meeting, click here! |

RETIREMENT...THAT'S TOO FAR AWAY TO THINK ABOUT!! It is hard to believe that we don't know all there is to know about our retirement!! Do you know that there are 386 different ways to receive Social Security?? How can we be comfortable about retirement if we have no purpose - and, according to Rob Kolb, the purpose of our planning for our retirement is to get to the top and to get back down once we decide to "make the move"!! Are you prepared? Whether you are heading toward retirement in a few years or a few decades, a plan is very important!! Today Rob shared with us the value of planning ahead, looking to the spousal benefits of social security, and talking with your financial adviser so that you make the right choice for your retirement!! For all the pictures of today's meeting, click here! |

"WAKE UP, KICK BUTT, BE KIND, REPEAT..." These were some of the thoughts passed on by our speaker at our July 9th meeting, David Bartley. David, a former NASA employee and currently a loan officer with Vitek Mortgage had a background that all of us hope we never have to face. However, it was this adversity that has shown him why he is here today and what he has to give to every one of us...and you, and you, and to himself! When he came to the end of his "rope" in 2010 is when he realized that he was at that end for everyone else except himself. His reality was that he needed to help himself before he could help anyone else. He discovered that the question was "what's wrong with you?" as opposed to 'what happened to you?" Two Cars, Two Lines, One Solution!!!! The Rotary Club of Rocklin/Loomis Basin awards mini-grants every November to teachers with a project that meets our guidelines! THIS WAS A PROJECT! Josh Hanosh, a 7th grade algebra teacher at Springview Middle School, used the theory that "When students "do" rather than "memorize", it greatly affects how students learn and what they learn!! Oh to go back to middle school again - using this method we could all learn algebra!! Demonstrating this point, Josh used several "do" methods for his students to learn the concept of algebra....then there was this project - using the cars he taught them that if you use two points of data they can find the equation of a line!!!
Josh Hanosh Students demonstrating They also learned that the application of solving a system graphically and algebraically allows them to gain an answer that they can then observe!! Brilliant!! It is always rewarding when you realize that all the work we do in Rotary is helping others...service above self! For all pictures from meeting, click here! |

Bill also gave us a tour of his huge facility. We saw rows of race cars as well as the service area where anyone can bring their cars in to be worked on by Bill’s expert mechanics. James inquired what it would cost to have them swap out the engine in his BMW. Sorry James - you could not handle the extra power and speed.
Watch for Bill's special auction item at the Feast for Rotary event in February. Click Here for more pictures. |

for the bell's safety, and that he was, in fact, a ROTARIAN (not, a ROTATARIAN)- the bell was returned.
Our speaker for today was Coach Villiam Tuirai (Coach V) who provided an energetic and motivational speech on "The life characteristics that yield championship results". Coach V is a former football coach for U.C. Davis and is now a full-time motivational speaker. The entire Club was fully motivated and prepared to take on life's challenges from a positive perspective by the end of the meeting. For More Pictures: Click Here |

Our club became the first club in the District (41 clubs) and the 3rd in the Zone (25 Districts) to achieve the status of Premier Ignite Club!
If you were not aware, the Rotary Zone Director, Ken Boyd, developed this program to help grow Rotary club memberships. This program was designed to create the activity that would help us grow and retain members.
Depending club size, each club needed to score a certain number of points in order to qualify for the premier status. We needed 310 points to qualify. On August 29th, when we inducted Conrad Spadero and Phil Stein, we achieved exactly 310 points. At the Fireside Chat and Social, we scored another 25 points. Bringing our total to 335.
How can you help? Continue to share with others what Rotary is all about, and invite them to one of our meetings. Remember, we became a Premier Club by working together; and in order to achieve Brad's goals, we need to keep the momentum moving forward. |

invests his time to Rotary; and Mary Jo explained value of treasury to Rotary.
After the presentation, we switched gears and joined the rest of the Club for food, drinks, and friendship. Current members and guests; our four new members; and three prospective members enjoyed Ed’s solar cooked meatballs and other fine food. Mary Jo was awarded her #1 Sponsor Pin for sponsoring Marlene into the Club.
Thanks to everyone who made this a wonderful evening.

Do You Put Your "Kids First"?? There are many programs out there to protect the children who are not properly cared for...Kids First is a local program whose main objective is the health and safety of our children. Barbara Besana, Executive Director, played a jeopardy game with our members to determine how much we know about the program...we did poorly!!
According to Barbara Besana, their vision is "Our vision is that all children live in a safe, healthy and nurturing home. Established in 1989, KidsFirst has three sites: Roseville, Auburn, and Citrus Heights. We provide services to families across the Sierra-Sacramento region." What a great way to teach us more about the way to get involved! For more information go to www.kidsfirstnow.org ! |

STAND UP TO STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!! From Crisis Line to a full-service agency, Stand Up Placer creates an environment where everyone needs to be ready to stand up for the cause - the community, the agency and the victim! This non-profit agency has been a part of this community for the past 36 years, even though it has had several different names - Peace for Families, Placer Women's Center and now Stand Up Placer!
This facility is survivor driven as violence is a cycle that the victim need to retreat from...if the survivor learns how to build for the future the agency has done their job! To see more pictures from this meeting, click here! |
